Wireless Groups Developing Content Ratings

26.04.2005

As multimedia streaming audio and video became available for mobile phones and other wireless devices, it`s only a matter of time before adult material providers use it as an outlet. A wireless industry group has begun defining a standardized rating system that will eventually be applied to all content supplied by carriers.

The Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association said it hopes to act one step ahead of the adult entertainment industry, reaching out to individual labels and entertainment industry groups to help develop a ratings system, similar to the one for motion pictures and video games.

So far, companies like Playboy, Hustler and Wicked Wireless have signaled their interest in providing content for the exploding mobile market. Industry officials say they want to act now to head off any possible consumer backlash, especially from parents who are concerned about the content their children might access on their phones.

CTIA officials have not commented publicly on their efforts to develop a ratings system, but have acknowledged the fact - in a brief message on their Web site - that those efforts are underway.

Some industry analysts said the wireless industry should tread carefully, and take a cue from Internet portals and service providers. While not setting themselves up as censors, AOL and MSN have successfully implemented parental controls on Web content, and have generally won praise for their efforts.
